Walking is one of the simplest ways to care for our health. It requires no equipment, no training and can be done at your own pace. Beyond the physical benefits, walking can also help us feel calmer and more connected.
At the Christina Ghobadi Foundation, we believe every step can also have meaning. Walking when done alone or with others during the annual Walk for Wellbeing also helps raise awareness and support for young people living with cancer.
Here are some of the many benefits of walking:
1. Supports Physical Health
Walking keeps the body active in a gentle and sustainable way. It improves circulation, strengthens muscles and bones and supports heart health. Unlike more intensive exercise, walking can be adjusted to suit different levels of energy.
2. Boosts Energy and Stamina
Fatigue is common during busy times in life and walking can help gradually rebuild stamina. Even brief daily walks can ease everyday tasks and boost long-term energy and resilience.
3. Reduces Stress
The steady rhythm of walking can help clear the mind and lower stress. It provides a simple way to pause and reset, especially when done outdoors. Fresh air, natural light and gentle movement all contribute to a greater sense of calm.
4. Improves Mood
Walking helps boost mood by releasing feel-good endorphins. It can ease anxious thoughts and offer a sense of accomplishment through simple movement. For many, a short walk is a gentle way to begin or end the day on a positive note.
5. Strengthens Connection
Walking can be social as well as personal. It provides an opportunity to spend time with friends, family or colleagues in an easy and relaxed way. Walking together also creates a sense of shared purpose which is at the heart of our Walk for Wellbeing.
Looking ahead: Walk for Wellbeing 2025
We invite you to take part in the Walk for Wellbeing 2025 this October. It is an opportunity to look after your own wellbeing while helping raise money that goes directly towards wellness grants for young people living with cancer.
Set yourself a goal for how many kilometres you think you can walk during October. What matters is not the distance but the intention behind each step so no number is too small!
